What happened
OpenAI launched the self-serve ChatGPT Ads Manager beta at ads.openai.com on May 5, 2026, removing the prior $50,000 minimum spend (itself down from $200,000–$250,000 at the February pilot). Cost-per-click bidding runs $3–$5 CPC, $25–$60 CPM. ChatGPT’s 800M weekly users are now a paid ad surface. OpenAI projects $1B in ad revenue in 2026 scaling to $25B by 2029.

The EMOR AI take
The AI your customers ask about your business is now an ad-supported product. That changes how AI discovery works in your category, and it’s why we build customer-facing systems on platforms whose incentives stay aligned with the customer, not the advertiser.
Once the assistant your customers ask becomes an ad surface, paid placement starts competing with honest recommendations in your category. The defensive play is to own customer-facing systems whose incentives sit with the customer, not an advertiser bidding against you. Keep your booking and answering on platforms that stay on your side.
What this means for your business
- Own customer systems aligned with buyers, not advertisers
- Compete in AI discovery as ads enter results
- Keep booking on platforms that stay neutral
